US air traffic controllers are more and more looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to delays caused by weather and other issues.

Over 3,000 US flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," he remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their concerns directly.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, can I find an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airfields said flights would be held up due to a lack of employees - one of the highest since the shutdown began.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second most extended halt in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to fly in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to the professionals.

"I need my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel stretching upward to the city of Oakland.
