Alleged Bondi Attackers Operated Solo and Did Not Preparation in the Philippines, Police Confirm.

The two suspected attackers who carried out the fatal incident at a Hanukkah gathering on Bondi Beach, which claimed 15 lives, are believed to have been lone actors, per national authorities.

Authorities also confirmed that Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed Akram, 24, journeyed to the Philippines on 1 November. Their itinerary included landing in the main city Manila before traveling onward that same day to Davao City. The father and son returned to Sydney on 29 November.

No Evidence of Planning During Stay

Investigators assert the pair did not receive any type of terrorist instruction or "organizing" during their stay in the Philippines. Preliminary inquiries from local authorities suggest they "mostly stayed in" their accommodation.

The shooting—labeled as Australia's worst firearm massacre since 1996—has been officially classified as a terrorist incident.

"We are currently examining the evidence," the commissioner said, noting that preliminary assessments indicate that "the alleged offenders are suspected to have been lone actors."

National law enforcement Chief Krissy Barrett informed media on Tuesday that CCTV footage tracking the accused attackers' movements in the Philippines had been handed over to Australian authorities.

"There is little to no indication to suggest these alleged offenders were part of a wider terrorist cell, or were instructed by overseas entities to perpetrate an act of violence," the police chief said.

Yet, the duo were additionally not necessarily in the Philippines on a leisure trip, the official noted. She stressed that, since the probe is ongoing, new evidence might emerge.

Ideology and Legal Charges

In prior statements, Australian leader Anthony Albanese remarked it looks as though both accused gunmen were "inspired by Islamic State" beliefs.

During the shooting, Sajid Akram was killed by police. He and his son Naveed—reportedly carrying rifles—allegedly opened fire on guests at the Jewish festival celebration.

Naveed Akram, who was wounded after the shooting, has been charged with 59 offences. These include 15 counts of murder and one count of carrying out a act of terrorism. He is due to face court in April.

Immigration Particulars

In the wake following the shooting, border authorities in the Philippines stated that the father had entered the country using an Indian passport, while his son used an Australian passport.

The pair had declared the southern city of Davao as their final destination. Their scheduled return flight to Australia was for Sydney.

Davao is a sprawling metropolis on the east of Mindanao, the Philippines' main southern island. Historically, Islamist militants have been known to operate in impoverished parts of southern and western Mindanao.
