Two students who were killed in the weekend's mass shooting on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their assailant persisted following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the single suspect detained in connection in the case.
The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which honored her memory at a gathering on Sunday.
Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also shared sympathies online, saying in part: “Words cannot express. Remembering her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”
The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the Ivy League university, according to relatives.
Umurzokov’s identity was verified by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.
An additional nine individuals were hurt in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Law enforcement reported late Sunday that a 24-year-old male taken into custody in a police operation at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and go in another, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”
Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate renewed concern for our public”.
The assailant discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the engineering facility on over the weekend, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a authority informed the media outlet.
Officers that searched the lodging seized two firearms and two ammunition clips when the suspect was arrested, as was reported.
Of the nine hurt, one pupil was allowed to go home, stated Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.
An educational institution, a independent school in Durham, North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.
Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only here growing up... but at the university she was an incredible light in that institution as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the club. “Ella was known for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she worked for her branch and fellow classmates,” he said.
Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Umurzokov’s family, loved ones, and peers and grieve for of his potential.”
The fatal shooting at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest higher education institution with about over seven thousand undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to data.
