Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

His passing follows just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles says farewell to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
