RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
