Emerging Foreign Policy Vision Points to Europe's Core Issue: A Supposed Lack of Xenophobia?

Throughout his initial presidency, commentators often suggested that Donald Trump's remarks should be interpreted earnestly rather than word for word. However, real-world experience suggest that this approach could have reversed the logic.

An emergent U.S. National Security Strategy coupled with a series of statements from U.S. figures, Trump proxies, and Trump himself have precipitated what could be one of the most severe crises for transatlantic unity, the security framework that has sustained stability and freedom in Europe since 1945.

From Financial Contributions to Civilizational Fear

While Trump's earlier complaint centered on Europe's perceived refusal to fund its own defense, his vision has now evolved into a far more alarming outlook.

Tinged with racial prejudice and a deep-seated disdain for Europe's governing bodies and officials, he has spoken about the risk of civilizational erosion on a continent he has rarely visited and mostly viewed from the interior of a luxury vehicle.

"His recent interview devoid of clear ideological coherence is nevertheless replete with another element: the muddled anxiety of an ageing white man confronted with a changing world."

A conspiratorial Maga perspective, which has already influenced contentious U.S. immigration and policing policies, is now clearly to be shaping Washington's prism of Europe.

The Racist Core

According to this logic, immigration from the global south causes a cultural dilution of European countries, rendering them "feeble" under "foolish" leaders and paving the way for their eventual decline. It constitutes an openly racist theory, with the president's allies making clear their support for far-right political parties across Europe.

Although the general thrust of this race-baiting is familiar, its meaning for the continent's defense are critically important.

For Trump and his adherents—a group that includes billionaire Elon Musk, who has called for the breakup of the EU—all politics is inherently transactional. But, whereas the previous argument was about financial fairness, the new claim is that a declining Europe is undeserving due to its embrace of multiculturalism.

Weakening from Within

During the conversation, Trump joins these dots in a kind of wish-fulfillment exercise. He concedes that the Kremlin desires a divided Europe. Trump proclaims Europe is weak, and in exposing the fissures in Washington and European capitals, he inadvertently aids Putin by actively undermining European unity—all while denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is unfolding at possibly the most critical moment for Europe in decades, amid a brutal conflict in Ukraine and rising Russian-hostile actions across the continent.

While Europe cleaves ever tighter to Kyiv amid continuing warnings of American abandonment, the peril is that Trump has constructed a rationale for not listening to his allies.

The European Response

These developments requires a firm reaction from capitals across Europe. While some figures, including Germany's leader, have been blunt in their pushback, including British officials—have continued with a policy of attempting to appease the White House.

Recently, the UK government declined to criticize the president's remarks about Europe or his renewed attack on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

They said, "The Prime Minister has a productive partnership with the U.S. president and a good working relationship with the London mayor, and is focused on working with both to deliver stronger results for the British public."

The stark reality is that the president intends what he says and says them consistently. It is past time to abandon the pretense that things are different.
