Accounts circulated of numerous explosions and the noise of low-altitude aircraft in Caracas in the small hours of Saturday morning. This situation has prompted allegations from Venezuela's authorities and calls for global scrutiny.
Venezuela's socialist administration has condemned the United States of committing "imperialist aggression," claiming that former President Donald Trump reportedly directed strikes against the Latin American country. In an official statement, the authorities stated that strikes had targeted Caracas and several other provinces: Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua state.
"The sole aim of these strikes is to gain control of our nation's key assets, especially its oil and resources," the government declared.
The government urged the global community to denounce the strikes, which it described a "flagrant violation of global law" that placed millions of lives in peril.
Eyewitnesses described feeling at least seven powerful blasts around 2:00 AM local time. Citizens in various neighborhoods reportedly ran into the open.
"Everything shook. It was horrible. We experienced explosions and aircraft in the sky," said one local.
Smoke was reported billowing from major military installations in Caracas: the La Carlota military airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna base military base, where leader Maduro is believed to have a residence.
The leader of bordering Colombia, Gustavo Petro, stated on social media that "Right now they are striking Caracas... attacking it with rockets." He requested an immediate emergency session of the United Nations Security Council.
The Colombian government, which just joined the Security Council, stated it would initiate defense protocols at its frontier with its neighbor.
These alleged strikes are preceded by a prolonged pressure campaign by the US against the Venezuelan regime. Beginning in last summer, there has been a substantial naval deployment off the country's Caribbean coast and a series of strikes on ships linked to drug trafficking.
The government has stated "the implementation of emergency" and directed all national defence plans to be initiated. It has also urged its citizens to take to the streets and "denounce this external act."
American officials and the Pentagon did not publicly responded to requests for clarification regarding the events.
