Far-Right Former Lawmaker J.A. Kast Elected as Chile Incoming President.

After a definitive second-round vote, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.

A Clear-Cut Victory

With over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Platform Centered On Law and Order and Migration

Recognized for his strong Catholic views and praise for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly built on promises to address rising insecurity and significantly restrict migration.

He repeatedly pointed to foreigners, notably the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the race, he gave an final demand for them to leave before the inauguration or face expulsion.

Despite his sweeping electoral victory, Kast is not expected to command an absolute majority in parliament, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are counted together.

This legislative landscape might hinder his agenda, including a vow to cut public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a plan for which he has yet to offered specifics.

"There are many questions about what a Kast government will look like that are uncertain because he has not explained how he will implement them," said a political science analyst.
