Personalities from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood world are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the shocking passing of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump took to social media to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". The post, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bail was set at a substantial amount.
The response to Trump's post was swift and scathing.
This is a disgusting and vile comment,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the statements. She pointed to previous comments from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Have you no decency? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
A number of Republican elected officials also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and mental health some families face.
Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly dared members in his party to defend the statements.
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends unequivocally following the shooting of another individual.
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" while posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
