A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind assisted us verify the footage.
We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site from which the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
