NRL Club Star Eli Katoa Sidelined for Whole 2026 Season After Serious Head Injuries and Brain Surgery

Melbourne Storm backrower Eli Katoa will miss the complete 2026 rugby league season as he focuses on rehabilitation at home in his home state, following coming back from a prolonged stay in New Zealand where he underwent brain surgery.

Sequence of Events

The 25-year-old athlete sustained three head impacts during a single afternoon while representing Tonga in a international match against the Kiwis. This led to convulsions while on the sideline, necessitating urgent medical care.

A medical operation to relieve a brain bleed left the player in the hospital and temporarily grounded to his club base.

The team announced recently that the forward has now come back and is recovering, having also made a brief visit to a local medical facility.

“Eli’s health and wellbeing remain our top concern,” said the club's chief executive Justin Rodski. “It is great to have him home safely and under the supervision of our medical staff and local specialists.”

The Road to Recovery

Rodski noted that the athlete is improving each day and is eager to pursuing his recovery in a home environment.

Importantly, the executive stated that there is no timeframe for Katoa’s recovery or a comeback to the field.

“After discussions with our medical team and neuro specialists, Eli will not return to training this pre-season and won’t be available for the 2026 season,” he emphasized. “There is a lengthy recovery process ahead of him, and his focus will be on achieving complete wellness prior to contemplating a potential comeback to training.”

Rodski finished by noting that Katoa is a much loved and respected part of the squad and club, and that the entire club will rally around him and assist him during his rehabilitation period.

League Investigation

The National Rugby League is currently finalizing its investigation into the circumstances that led to Katoa’s surgery.

The powerful forward, who was selected for the competition’s team of the year at the annual awards ceremony, seemed to sustain a concussion during the warm-up for the international contest.

Despite this, he was allowed to play in the game and endured two more head impacts before being substituted in the second half.

His state worsened rapidly, and he required oxygen on the sideline before being taken off on a medicab.

The league has sought to tackle issues around concussions in the sport in recent years, introducing stricter enforcement on high tackles and expanding the post-concussion stand down period for affected players.
