British Katie Boulter admits she feels she has to "choose between my physical health and my ranking" as the competition continues for a spot in next January's Australian Open main draw.
While the standard WTA Tour tournament schedule is over, there are still standing points to be earned in Chile, regional locations, Ecuador and European destinations.
The female competitor lineup for the opening Grand Slam of the 2026 season will be based on the global standings of the December cutoff, which could cause a difficult choice for competitors close to the qualification line.
Previous British number one Boulter suffered an hip muscle in her last tournament of the year in Asian venues last month, and is now considering whether to participate in the WTA 125 secondary tournament in European venues, the European nation, in the opening days of December.
The athlete's ongoing health concern, and the fact she would need to win at least three matches in Angers to enhance her position, means she may likely ultimately not participating.
In opposition, male athletes are not facing the identical predicament, as for the initial instance the men's Australian Open participant roster will be drawn up from current week's standings, which is the ATP's standard annual-final standing calculation.
The change is designed to deterring competitors from chasing position points during what is essentially the break period.
This season has been a challenging one for Boulter.
She secured just 14 elite primary competition contests and lately parted ways with trainer Biljana Veselinovic after a three-year collaboration in which she captured several WTA victories.
"Biljana is an exceptional trainer, and an exceptionally quality human as well, which produces circumstances particularly challenging," Boulter stated.
The pursuit for a replacement instructor is currently ongoing, seeking someone who has elite expertise as Boulter maintains the belief she can be a world-class competitor.
"Moving ahead with a replacement instructor, a key aspect I'm completely sure on is that they are going to be an individual who has extensive experience in how to make it to the peak performance of this profession," she explained.
"I've been ranked as advanced as twenty-three and I believe I can return to that position. I am not convinced my standard has diminished, I think the steadiness should improve.
"My goal is not merely to be placed fifty, forty, thirty, 20 - we've accomplished that. The goal is to be among 20."
