Senegal's Rising Star Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the training centre. They prevented me from going back home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to the title and being named best player.

A month later, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are notable assets. He admits he must to control his aggression, having been shown red early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. He is often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the senior top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
