The direst potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been mapped by researchers, encompassing a searing 4C increase in average temperatures to a two-metre rise in sea level. An alternative projection envisions a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact farming and power requirements.

  • Severe Heating: Worldwide averages exceeding 4C by 2100 could happen if climate action collapses or if powerful amplifying effects including the tropical forests dying emit its huge repository of carbon. These dire projections could be used to inform the development of critical national infrastructure, including expanded cities, power generation facilities and urban drainage systems. Understanding these future hazards could also speed the drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The analysis created the severe projections using a combination of real-world events, digital projections and established principles. The possibilities exclude potential global problems such as the agricultural collapse and increased conflict.

The project was initiated as part of a official risk assessment framework. Previous assessments have stated that not enough attention was being allocated to catastrophic yet improbable risks.

The government's climate advisors has recommended that the UK needs to "adapt to 2C" and assess the dangers for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been criticised as being "inadequate" by environmental groups.
