Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major honors show draws close, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
