Venus Williams, Receives Special Entry for Her Initial Australian Open in Five Years.

Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the Australian summer," Williams said. "I have experienced so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a venue that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. This year will mark the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to take part in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the first round at the venue in 2015.
